According to the latest analysis, there is no specific time in 2025 that can be considered the “end of the road” for the US shale oil industry. Instead, this development is symbolic, reflecting the oil price strategy of the OPEC+ alliance (led by Russia and Saudi Arabia) that is creating heavy pressure on US producers. However, the shale oil industry has not completely collapsed.

Price pressure from OPEC+

OPEC+ continuously adjusts production, aiming to regain market share, especially in the US market. This forces many shale oil companies to cut investment and reduce the number of operating rigs.

The cost of new oil production in the US is currently around $65/barrel, much higher than the $3–5/barrel of Saudi Arabia and the $10–20/barrel of Russia.  This puts US companies at a huge disadvantage in the oil price competition.

Gradual decline in production

According to newly released data, the US shale oil industry has cut $1.8 billion in capital investment in just two quarters, the number of drilling rigs has decreased by about 10%, while hydraulic drilling teams have also lost 76 units compared to the beginning of the year.

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that oil production will fall from 13.6 million barrels/day (2025) to 13.1 million barrels/day by the end of 2026. This will be the first decline since 2015 (excluding the pandemic period).

Despite being squeezed, the shale oil industry has shown resilience thanks to improved drilling technology and cost optimization.  US production still peaked at 20.96 million barrels per day in May and remained close to 20.8 million barrels per day in August 2025. (AInvest)

Georgia, USA – A small meteorite that just fell through the roof of a house in McDonough (Georgia) is shocking the scientific community. Analysis results show that it is about 4.56 billion years old – about 20 million years older than Earth.

Rare phenomenon in the US sky

In the early morning of June 26, 2025, a bright fireball tore through the sky of the Southeast United States, observed by people in many states. After that, a sonic boom rang out, causing many people to mistake it for an earthquake. The event ended with a cherry tomato-sized meteorite crashing through the roof of a McDonough home, leaving a dent in the floor.

Geological research: older than Earth

Geologists at the University of Georgia, led by scientist Scott Harris, analyzed 23 grams of the meteorite sample. The results showed that the meteorite formed in the early Solar System, 4.56 billion years ago – about 20 million years older than the estimated age of Earth (4.54 billion years).

The meteorite is believed to have originated in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is likely that it was a fragment of a large asteroid that was destroyed about 470 million years ago.

To be officially named

Scientists plan to propose the name “McDonough Meteorite”, associated with the location of the crash, and submit it to the Meteorite Naming Committee of the International Meteorite Association for approval.

Scientific and social significance

This is the 27th recorded meteorite fall in the state of Georgia, of which only 6 have been witnessed by people.

The event provides a valuable insight into the formation of the Solar System, and is a testament to the effectiveness of modern space object tracking systems.

The closest star to the Sun is Proxima Centauri, about 4.24 light years away. It is an M-type red dwarf in the Alpha Centauri system (including Alpha Centauri A, B and Proxima).

Regarding the possibility of life around Proxima:

Proxima has at least two confirmed planets:

Proxima Centauri b: has a mass approximately equal to Earth, located in the habitable zone. This is the most promising candidate for the possibility of life outside our closest Solar System.

Proxima Centauri d: much smaller, orbits closer, unlikely to support life.

In addition, there have been hints of a giant planet Proxima Centauri c, but this is not certain.

Challenges for life on Proxima b:

Active red dwarf: Proxima erupts with frequent bursts of ultraviolet and X-rays, which could strip the planet of its atmosphere.

Tidal locking: the planet could be tidally locked (one side always facing the star), making one side hot and the other cold and dark, making it difficult to stabilize its temperature.

Atmosphere & magnetic field: If Proxima b had a thick atmosphere and a strong magnetic field like Earth, it could withstand the radiation and maintain stable conditions for liquid water – making life possible.

Beyond Proxima Centauri:

Other nearby stars like Alpha Centauri A & B (more Sun-like) are also better candidates in the long run. Newer telescopes (like the ELT, James Webb, and the Future Space Project) are hunting for Earth-like planets there.

Bottom line: The closest candidate for a potentially habitable world is Proxima Centauri b – a quasi-Earth-like planet that sits right next to our astronomical neighbor. Whether it actually supports life, however, depends largely on its ability to retain an atmosphere and protect it from red dwarf radiation.
